A Slice of Old Florida Charm Awaits on This Gulf Coast Gem

A Slice of Old Florida Charm Awaits on This Gulf Coast Gem

As one of the last remaining slices of old Florida on the Gulf Coast, Anna Maria Island delivers tranquility and natural beauty in abundance. Free of high rises and chain establishments, this barrier island offers seven miles of powdery white sand beaches with dazzlingly clear emerald and blue waters. A slice of old Florida charm awaits on this Gulf Coast gem.

Three small beach towns with distinctive personalities sit on the northern tip of the island. Quaint cottages and mom-and-pop shops prevail, though Holmes Beach features more amenities like beachfront resorts. Bradenton Beach is known as the “Friendly City by the Sea,” hosting community events like the annual Bridge Street Festival. Historic Pine Avenue serves as the central hub with independent boutiques and eateries.

The island has an enduring family-friendly vibe, with activities focused on appreciating nature. Rent a bike to explore the paved multi-use trail running the island’s length. Stop to fish from three stellar piers or comb for shells along the shores. Charter boats also depart for snorkeling amongst coral reefs or spotting dolphins at play. If you prefer to stay on land, the island features a community garden and butterfly park.

Dining runs from flip-flop casual to upscale seafood. Pop into ice cream and candy stores for saltwater taffy and key lime pie on a stick. Try grouper sandwiches or stone crab claws harvested from local waters. Every restaurant boasts sunset water views, as both the Gulf and Tampa Bay surround the island.

While changes have come, remnants of the early 1900s still exist from when the island served as a getaway for Tampa’s elite. A 1911 jailhouse stands as a museum, along with an old general store. You can learn about the island’s history through boat building and fishing demonstrations.

The island averages 361 days of sunshine annually, with winter highs around 70°F making it the ideal spot for an anytime escape. A slice of old Florida charm awaits on this Gulf Coast gem. Leave the high rises behind and come enjoy this haven where nostalgia and natural wonders combine for the ultimate in laidback charm.
